These are no guilt apple turnovers because they’re much lower in sugar and fat than store bought. You won’t miss a thing! Most turnovers are loaded with sugar and fat and tastes so good, but they may leave you with a guilty aftertaste. I use prepared puff pastry for this recipe. You can buy frozen sheets, some markets even sell 5″ x 5″ squares. It takes no time to defrost when you need it. You can easily substitute with peaches or pears. If you use frozen fruit, make sure to defrost and drain any liquids before cooking.
Ingredients:
- 10 sheets of puff pastry, cut 5″ x 5″
- 5 medium sized apples, peeled and diced
- 1 Tbsp butter
- 1/2 tsp ground cinnamon
- 1/8 tsp salt
- 1/2 tsp pure vanilla extract
- 1/3 cup slightly packed brown sugar
- 1 egg, beaten
- 1 Tbsp water
Steps:
- Wash, peel, and dice the apples.
- In a skillet, melt the butter and add the apples, cinnamon, salt, vanilla extract, and brown sugar. Cook on medium heat until the apples have softened and any liquid has reduced into a thick syrup.
- Pre-heat the oven to 400* F
- Add the 1 Tbsp of water to the beaten egg. You will brush the edges of the puff pastry with the egg mixture and fill each sheet with a spoonful of the apple filling.
- Turn one corner of the puff pastry to another corner to form a triangle. Use the blades of the fork to firmly press the edges of the puff pastry together. Make 3 slits on the top of each folded pastry to release the pressure as it cooks.
- Use the rest of the egg mixture to brush over the folded pastries and place on a parchment lined baking sheet.
- Bake at 400* F for 20-25 minutes.
Notes:
If you want an extra treat, you can drizzle a little glaze over the Turnovers
For the glaze:
Mix 1/2 cup of powdered sugar with 1-2 Tbsp of milk and drizzle over with a spoon onto slightly cooled turnovers. Yum!

Delish!
